When you purchase an animation on Motiopix, you may see different file formats included.

Downloads

  • All downloads on Motiopix are delivered as a ZIP archive.
  • The ZIP may contain one or more animation files, depending on the item.
  • Always extract the ZIP file to access the animation files inside.

Lottie JSON (.json)

  • This is the most common Lottie format.
  • It is a text-based file that contains animation instructions.
  • Used mainly for websites and apps.
  • Plays using Lottie players in browsers, mobile apps, and frameworks.
  • Easy to embed, lightweight, and widely supported.

Lottie JSON is best when you just want to display the animation as-is on a website or app.

.lottie package

  • A .lottie file is a packaged version of a Lottie animation.
  • It may include multiple animations, images, and metadata in one file.
  • Usually smaller and more efficient than raw JSON.
  • Works with modern Lottie players that support the .lottie format.

.lottie is a newer, cleaner way to deliver Lottie animations in a single file.

Rive (.riv)

  • .riv files are used for Rive animations.
  • They support real-time interactivity (hover, click, state changes).
  • Often used for buttons, characters, and interactive UI elements.
  • Requires the Rive runtime to play on websites and apps.

Rive is mostly used when animations need to react to user actions.

Source files include the project files. These are used to make major changes to an animation and are usually intended for developers, designers, or motion artists.

Common source file types

  • .aep – Adobe After Effects project file.
  • .rev – Rive editor project file.

You may need source files if

  • You want to significantly change timing, structure, or animation logic.
  • You need to re-export the animation in a different format.
  • Your developer needs to modify the animation at a deep level.

Some authors may provide files for other editors or tools. Always check the item description to see what files are included. If you are unsure which format you need, the safest choice is to:

  1. Check how you plan to use the animation (web, app, interaction).
  2. Confirm what your developer or designer needs.
  3. Read the item description carefully before purchasing.
